Trump Exempts Key Tech Imports from Tariffs, Protecting Consumers and Chipmakers

Donald Trump's administration announced the exemption of mobile phones, computers, laptops, chips and other electronics from "retaliatory tariffs ", limiting the scope of the new measures and preventing possible increases for consumers.

The exemptions, published Friday night (04/11/2025) by U.S. Customs and Border Protection , narrow the scope of the levies by exempting products from Trump's tariff on China and the base global tariff of 10% on almost all other countries.

Thus, no additional tariffs will be imposed on smartphones, laptops, hard drives, processors and memory – products that are hardly manufactured in the US and domestic production would take several years to establish.

The same list also includes semiconductor manufacturing machinery , which favors companies such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), which has announced significant investments in the US , as well as other international microchip manufacturers.

This tariff exemption, however, is expected to be temporary as these exemptions come after the White House's initial order not to impose multiple tariffs on some sectors.
