Australian residents and thousands of tourists said goodbye to 2024 on New Year's Eve (31.12.2024) today, welcoming the new year with a spectacular fireworks display at festive events in many cities across the country.
More than a million people flocked to the shores of Sydney Harbour in Australia, while hundreds of thousands more lined the banks of the Yarra River in Melbourne to watch New Year's celebrations that continued well into the new year.
In the "New Year's Eve capital of the world," attendees changed time (at 3:00 p.m. Greek time), with nine tons of fireworks lighting up the sky above the opera house and harbor, from both the east and west sides of the famous Sydney Bridge.
In one of the first countries to welcome the new year, many Australians are saying goodbye to 2024.
"There are of course a lot of wars and unrest in a lot of places," Stuart Edwards, 32, an insurance worker, told AFP. "It would be good for the world if things sorted themselves out."
Many foreign tourists traveled to the city for the holidays and the change of year.
High-tech fireworks launched from 27 locations in Melbourne put on a show marking the turn of the year for an estimated 500,000-plus people who celebrated in the streets.
Around 80,000 fireworks lit up the skies over Brisbane, while in Perth and Adelaide, tens of thousands of people turned out to celebrate with fireworks and live music. Launceston combined its New Year's Eve festivities with the city's annual beer festival.
