According to reports from Jerusalem, the group of Palestinian prisoners escaped from the Gilboa prison in northern Israel just before sunrise on Monday, September 6.

The escaped prisoners built the tunnel under a washbasin used for washing their mouths, from where it goes far underground.

The Palestinians escaped from Gilboa's prison just hours before the start of a major Jewish New Year's holiday.

Israeli PM's Response

In a statement, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett described the escape of Palestinian prisoners from a prison in the country's top security district as a "very serious incident."

According to officials, there was also a danger that the inmates would not have built more tunnels in the jail, mostly due to security-related crimes.As a result, all 400 inmates at Gilboa Prison have been carefully relocated since the incident.

Hamas praises escaped prisoners

Hamas, the Palestinian group that rules the besieged Gaza Strip, has called the escape of six Palestinian prisoners from the Gilboa prison a "courageous move" and a "real defeat" for the Israeli security system.
