At least 23 people have been killed in a devastating monsoon rains in India.

Heavy monsoon rains in the Indian city of Mumbai on Sunday destroyed a large wall and destroyed several houses, according to AFP.

Meanwhile, rainwater entered a water purification complex, disrupting water supplies to most parts of the city, city officials said.

EDRF said a tree fell in the eastern part of the city on Sunday morning, causing the wall to collapse, burying several people.Seventeen bodies have been recovered and a rescue operation is underway in the area.

A local man, Feroz Khan, told AFP that "a girl was buried under the rubble in the same house and was shouting 'Save me, save me'." She was stuck in the mud, so I pulled her out.Her daughter has injuries to her legs.

The NDRF added that a landslide on the outskirts of Vakhroli, northeast of the city, on Sunday morning destroyed five houses and killed at least six people.

Twelve people were killed when a building collapsed in an area of Mumbai last month.

Similarly, in September last year, 39 people were killed when a three-storey building collapsed in the Bhiwandi area near Mumbai.

The Modi has sent his condolences to the families of those killed in Sunday's crash in a tweet and said they would be financially supported.
