Saudi Arabia breaks execution record: More than 300 people killed in 2024
A sad start for Saudi Arabia this year as the number of executions exceeded 300.
Saudi Arabia, which strictly adheres to Islamic law , had proceeded to execute 196 people in 2022, compared to 192 in 1995. This year, it managed to break its "record" as 303 people were sentenced to death.
The wealthy Gulf monarchy, in 2023, had executed the most prisoners in the world, after China and Iran, according to the NGO Amnesty International, which has been recording executions in the country since 1990.
The last 4 people executed in Saudi Arabia this year were convicted of common criminal law crimes, the Saudi ministry announced in a press release.
Taha al-Hajji, director of the European Saudi Organization for Human Rights (ESOHR), based in Berlin, described the 2024 executions as "incomprehensible and inexplicable" and condemned the "speed" with which they were carried out.
Human rights defenders had already warned that Saudi Arabia could exceed 300 executions this year.
